Clouds
Clouds are important to a plain landscape:
those familiar shapes that skate above the horizon,
trailing shadows that examine the featureless plateau,
extracting details that cannot be seen on a clear day,
adjusting our foolish estimates of near and far.
A stranger who trifles with our two-part scheme
of land and sky risks losing the outer world, the fate
of isolation best embraced as a gift.
